Come On A' My House: NOT

Here's a tip, if you're ever contemplating a household move, especially if you're contemplating making that move in the dead of winter, when horrendous winter storms tend to hit and shut down roads and services: do not plan to make that move on a Saturday.

When something goes wrong on a Saturday, it usually cannot be fixed until Monday, which means that you may face having the entire contents of your household packed and padlocked and inaccessible for 48 cold and snowy hours, which means, further, that while your old house might be satisfyingly empty, your new house will also be empty, and you will have nothing to sit on or sleep on and nothing to wear and nowhere to put your food. Also, because such things never happen in isolation, the cable and wireless hook-up guy will not show up to the empty new house to perform the vitally important task of setting up your cable and wireless network, so you won't even be able to curl up in a corner of your empty-but-nonetheless-pretty new house to bitch properly to the Interwebs about how badly things are going, and instead be forced to wander around your empty, cold old house looking for weak neighborhood signals to steal when you should be cleaning instead. And you will be very, very crabby.

Just thought I'd share that.

Having moved cross-country just a few months ago, I hear you. Right down to the searching for weak signals to steal.
Hope you're reunited with your stuff and all is well soon.

Funny thing, the phone and internet are all we have in our new empty house right now.

This sure has ended up being the most wintry of winter weekends. Whatever else happens/has happened, stay warm!

Oh, when we arrived in NYC, our truck didn't arrive for a WEEK. We had an air mattress and two cranky, drugged cats. Good times. Luckily, in NYC, everything is accessible so we ate around the neighbourhood for a week, but still. I was about to move into a hotel. Hope it goes by fast!

I feel you. Our house caught on FIRE the day we moved in (on a Saturday.) I think our electrician actually peed himself with the overtime extra service charges, etc. We all had to go back and sleep on my old apartment floor, because it was 20 degrees out, there was no heat in the new house (no electricity because of the fire), and we had three small kids on the house. Oh, and I was 3 months preggers. Ah. The good days. Hope tomorrow gets you all set up and cozy as is possible.

This reminds me a lot of my last move. We moved during winter, on a Saturday.

Only luckily we did not use a moving service. We had friends help us move instead. Friends who were willing to risk death teetering on the icy walks bearing furniture. The day before Christmas Eve.

Yes, the people who helped us move under those conditions are indeed worthy of sainthood. If I die before them, I'll be sure to put in a good word.

We moved in January. With snow. And a 1 year old. To a house we purchased from an aquaintance of my family. Owned by an ass who made us stand outside in the VERY COLD weather because the money hadn't cleared into his bank account yet (the lawyer's told him they had it, and to let us in. He refused.)

I actually called him an ass to his face. They wouldn't even let me in to use the bathroom.

Ah. Good times.

It will all be worth it in the end, though, don't you worry!

Crabby is the only approach at this juncture. Having moved while six months pg, all Empathy flows in your direction. Finally, consider this. While pg with baby 2, 15 ton, 110 foot high (we know because of the crane we had to hire) tree fell into our house in four places during a thunder storm, cracking the wall alongside our two-year old's crib. Cars? Garage? Roof? All gone. We slept in that damn house, without electricity and with the tree lodged in, for a week.

Oh no! That is just too sucky for words. Both houses we have owned, we moved in when I was pregnant. Pro? Not having to lift anything heavy. Con? Feeling extra-annoyed at every little thing I didn't notice when we first looked at the house.

Hope you get settled in soon!

But if your phone/internet/TV is with Rogers, you are screwed!

Sorry!

When my parents moved, their connection were finally set up one week after the date they were promised! I had to call a TV show and complain before Rogers did anything. No apologies, nothing!

Oh crappy, I thought of you this Saturday when the Big Storm was going through and wondering how it turned out. And now I know.

Hoping things get sorted out soon. In time to have a Christmas tree, and a rug to sit on, at least.

Catherine, (tried to email but bounced back)

It's been nice having you three across the street.
Even though we haven't seen much of each other the past while, it was comforting just knowing that you were over there.

I'll never forget those first few months of marathon walks and comparing notes to save our sanity. I'm not sure how well I would have faired with new motherhood if I didn't have that. Kyle made a good call when he dropped that note in our mailbox two years ago. A very smart man indeed.

Good luck with your move and we wish you all mounds of happiness in your new home.

Keep in touch.

Sharon, Mark and Mister Jakob

Damn. That sounds wretched. We also moved in the dead of winter. After spending SIX WEEKS living in a hotel (long story), the truck finally arrived, everything got in the house. We couldn't figure out why the fuck it was so cold in the house. Maybe because the door had been open all day? Oh no. Because the twit who had rented the house before us had SHUT OFF the heat and when we turned it back on the motor was blown. Unbeknownst to us, of course. We woke up in the morning and it was 51 degrees in the house. I was preggo and we had a 12 month old toddler. Good times, lemme tell ya.

You've got Internet and heat. I'd say life is hell right now, but you will certainly be able to look back at this and laugh in two years. We are. LOL

I truly feel your pain.

We moved 3 weeks ago, I still can't find things, and we spent the first 2 weeks without internet, in spite of their promises to the contrary. Ugh!!! Oh, and I was supposed to take the boys back to Scotland on Sunday for the holidays, but wasn't ready due to the chaos, so we're still trying to get out. Grrrr.

Oh dear - I totally hear you. We had to move last winter while I was 8 months pregnant. We're three hours away from my family, so while none of them came to help, they all called to tell my husband that he shouldn't let me do anything!

By the way, I found your blog last week when I was searching for a community for Feminist housewives. I didn't end up finding one, so I made one. If you have a few minutes to check it out, I'd really appreciate it. I'm new to all this and could use any suggestions you have. Here's the address: http://www.FeministHousewives.com

For you, I wish a nice, warm day with stable internet.
