Birthday Cake: A Zen Koan, By Wonderbaby
What is a birthday cake, when garnished with maraschino and laced with fruit? Dissatisfaction with frosting.
(Var.: If you have fruit-laced birthday cake, Wonderbaby will give you some; if you have no fruit-laced birthday cake, she will take it away from you.)

Sweet series!
she's so cute, she just looks so consternated
Mmm, mmm, good.
Around here, pastries are welcomed with a shrieking "cakie, cakie, cake!"
Love the one where she's leaning back on the chair..
The Boy has asked for cake for Christmas - nothing else.
Gosh, she's pretty.
That furrow slays me.
dude... sneakin' fruit in the bday cake? Even if it does taste like heaven I can hear the "Oh mommy, it must be lard-laden frosting or else!".
If you could hear Bumper right now, she is going crazy looking at these pics.
Fruit in cake? How could you? LOL.
KayTar makes those same faces in dealing with cake...plus the obligatory gagging face. LOL. But that is more sensory disgust than fruit-induced disgust.
At first I thought flutter said, "Constipated" which I felt was inaccurate.
Consternated. Yes. That makes more sense.
Love the pictures.
Dear Wonderbaby,
I am so sorry about all that fruit on your yummy icing. How discouraging for you. I hope you recover soon.
That last picture........so in preparation for being a teenaged girl!
Too funny!
We're all about birthday cakes in our house. When Matt turned 3 I let him have cake for breakfast. Just a cheapo chocolate one.
He didn't care about his gifts - that was the coolest thing ever.
(we will do it again next year, but my husband and I will not eat it. We were nauseous)
hahaa. interesting Zen Koan indeed. Happy Birthday to wonderboy, who and i have the same day of birthday.
i wish him all the best and may his life be filled with inner joy and peace.
Wonderbaby is adorable!
I have never commented hereā¦ but I would like to email you a post for the basement and none of the email links seem to work. Could you leave the info @ my blog?
Thanks!
I love that second-to-last photo.
The look of incredible dissatisfaction and discontent with the general state of the cake is priceless.
I'm with Wonderbaby. Cake should just be cake.
Man, I'm hungry.
(And she's darling. Happy birthday, beautiful little girl.)
The second to last shot looks as though she's shoved it away in disgust and is coming to the realization that someone has played a cruel, fruit-laden joke on her.
Happy birthday, WonderBaby, from another girl who had the great good sense to be born on the 14th of November. You, me, Frederick Banting and Monet. Not shabby company (and we'll just ignore Prince Charles, ok?)
So sorry I missed her birthday, C. Happy Belated to Wonderbaby!
I love the little toddler fingers in the first picture - delight! And then the frown at the end - hunh.
I love her precious face. Looks like the cake was good at first. The last picture is so cute.
Not sure who looks yummier -- your 2 year old (ACK!) or that cake.
picky, picky
I am EXACTLY the same way. :)
I am sooooo jealous!
It's not like it was really even super-fruity - it was just laced with cherries. Black Forest Cake. Which I wouldn't touch as a kid either, but still. Ungrateful.
If there are any leftovers from that cake, you could send them my way. I'd gladly take them off your hands!
Oh wow, I'll just need to look at that series of photos if I ever fancy a slice of cake again, the initial euphoria, then the slump!
Brilliant pictures. Have enjoyed finding and reading your blog!
Thank you for sharing such adorable pictures. I love her incredible range of expressions.
Soo adorable!
Kvelling!
Also, drooling a little.
SO totally adorable! I love the series too!!!
