Because The Year Just Wouldn't Have Been Complete Without A Pestilence
What Santa brought WonderBaby this year:
Chickenpox. Awesome.
At least he waited until after we had flown across the country and driven four hours into the hinterland of British Columbia to spring it on her. That was nice. She would have preferred a nice tricycle or a helicopter or a small developing country to rule over with an iron pacifier, but whatever. Pestilence is cool, too.
(We've missed you. We'll be back online in a day or two, once we're home and the pox have receded.
Happy New Year.)

OH NO! I didn't even know anyone GOT Chicken Pox anymore now that they have the vaccine!
POOR WONDERBABY!
Oh how awful! That photo just makes me feel so sorry for WonderBaby (and YOU!) Ugh.
I hope she mends quickly.
Happy New Year. (Yeah, right.)
OTJ
Oh, that poor beautiful (even covered in the pox) girl. Please excuse my Southern twang and know that I sincerely mean this when I say, "Bless her darlin' heart."
And yours too.
Isn't a pestilence on the eve of a new year considered good luck in some cultures? No, really, it MUST be.
Poor, poor thing. And poor, poor you. I imagine an itching child who doesn't understand that it's better not to scratch is a little difficult to handle.
Ring in the new year with lots of baking soda baths!
Bloody hell. That picture of wonderbaby is too much! Poor dear. At least you can cross that off the list of shitty things Santa could bring her next year right?
Damn! If my calculations are correct, she's just a month or two shy of getting her first dose of the Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine.
Poor Wonderbaby! Give her cyberhug from a friend in Florida. Hope she doesn't itch too badly.
And Happy New Year (said sincerely but with a fair amount of irony)
Poor thing! Too bad you are all the way west...I'd love to expose my son so he gets it over with! (not doing the vaccine)
Feel better, and happy travels!
Oh sweet something... how can she look so cute when in such discomfort? Only WB could pull that off. Give her hugs from me and B. So ummm... Happy New Year?
Awww poor kiddo! I hope that she gets better soon!
oh dear! maybe you'll feel better to know that when i was two, i caught chicken pox from my five-year-old sister, so my mom had to take care of two of us at the same time. still don't feel better? how about this - she caught it too. my dad moved out for two weeks to avoid the plague. so it could be worse!
(also, you can ignore the email i sent about the button - i got it already.)
happy new year to you and the whole her bad family! :)
Oh dear God - poor thing! And your baby, too!
She's so sweet.
My son also had the pox a month before his vaccination - I can tell you there is nothing worse than a sobbing toddler who doesn't understand why everything hurts and itches and why it's not okay to scratch.
Baking soda will be your friend. Buy huge boxes in the bulk aisle and raid the dollar store for new tub toys. Pour in twice as much baking soda as you'd think you'd need and keep her in till she's pruny.
Good luck, honey!
Poor baby girl. That look is so perfectly distressed that they should put it in the dictionary.
Poor baby! The Boy has missed this...so far...but I'm sure it will happen soon. Can't wait - looks like a whole lot of fun ;-). Hope WonderBaby feels better soon - and Happy New Year! We've missed you.
Oh, poor little one! We're sending you lots and lots of anti-itch wishes right now and hoping that the New Year holds much, much better things in store for all of you!
That Sucks. Like Capital "S" sucks. That really really sucks. Poor thing.
Oh my, that poor wee baby girl! I hope she gets well swiftly.
oh that poor little bundle. she will have an awesome resistance however.......how on earth did she get it tho? I finally caved and gave my girls the vaccine because they were never exposed! poor sweet thing.....
Awww baby girl. Lucky your Mommy has a million + one homeopaths and naturopaths and acupuncturists to dip you in while you 'vacation' here.. then again.
aww poor baby girl one more for the immune system. doctor mo-wo prescribes a nice bottle of courvoissier for mum, hey.
I think she probably asked for Camilla the Chicken not the Pox. (hugs)
Happy New Year!
feel better soon, sweetie!!
Mary
Nooo. That FACE!
Awww, that is awful - and only made worse by that poor sad face. Hope all is OK.
A pox on those pox!
Poor Wonderbaby and poor YOU! Socks on hands and oatmeal baths ... good luck!
Aw Jeez. I'm sorry Wonderbaby!!!!
You are still absolutely adorable even with the pox.
Oh, no. May 2007 bring you guys much better things (you deserve them).
Poor Wonder Baby! And poor you!
oh for god sakes.
girl.
Oh No! Wishing a speedy recovery!
Happy New Year!
What?! Oh no. You're definately up for a good 2007. Hoping that cute plagued girl is well soon.
Poor Wonderbaby.
Hopefully it won't be too rough on her. (And please do post and let us know whether or not you get some sadistic parents requesting play-dates so they can "share" the pox... I always find that strange.)
Happy New Year.
Oh, how awful. But, it is just terrible of me to love that photo even though she is obviously very unhappy and miserable. Yet, how she shines in her misery! A wonderbaby indeed! Hoping you all have a speedy recovery.
Poor sweetheart. Oh my goodness, I feel for her and you! That is awful and you aren't even in the comfort of your own home. Hope she starts to feel better very soon. I know she is young, but I wonder if you drew her a picture of herself (with pox too) and taught her to itch the picture instead of her body. I know that this has worked in the past for other children to prevent scars...good luck!
Oh, that picture has me clasping my hand to my mouth and wanting to reach into the computer to hug her. Poor Wonderbaby.
And poor you.
Hoping the new year brings the end of the pox, fast.
Well, the up side is that Wonderbaby's immunity will likely be stronger than what she would get from the vaccine AND your chance of getting rickets just plummeted.
But that face! That face!
oh. no. that face.
that face is out of this world.
so sorry for her and you.
Can you hear that? It's the sound of many, many mothers wanting to comfort your poor child. And you. After this I think you need some comforting, too.
I can't look at that picture of Wonderbaby any longer, it is breaking my heart!
Oh, poor WonderBaby! I think you need to have a word or twelve with Santa.
Here's to an itch-free trip home.
Out, damn pox.
Happy New Year!
Poor Wonderbaby!
The good news is- at least she's too young to obsessively pick at the scabs and get pox scars for life.
Happy New Year!
Oh poor little thing! And you too, like things weren't enough already! I can see she's being bathed in calamine and baking soda there...
Oh, that poor sweetie! I can only imagine how miserable you must all feel at the Wonderbaby household. I hope she gets over it soon.
Happy New Year!
Sheesh, Wonderbaby even rox the pox!
Poor thing, must be hard to be so damn cute. I sincerely hope she heals swiftly and without any scars.
Happy new year to each of you. May this be the last bout of pestilence you face this year.
What apicture of misery....
Poster Baby for Chicken Pox
Poor Baby, Poor You...
Wishing you a minor quarantine period over the holidays...
Happy New Year to you too!
Oh no. And it looks like she got a really GREAT case of them. So sorry for her and you.
Poor baby! There never is a good time, is there. My husband and I have small matching chicken pox scars on our hips. Maybe we were separated in a earlier life. Sending healing wishes!
That poor, little, sad and woebegone face....I am so sorry. Chickenpox, hate it, hate it, hate it! I got it when I was 21 years old. WTF!!
I hope your little girl is feeling much better now.
Oh no! That look on her face is heartbreaking - like she doesn't understand why she itches so much and feels so lousy. Poor thing.
At least getting them this early, she will have less risk of scars. Although she'll hate it in elementary school when all the other kids get time off of school for chicken pox and she'll be immune.
Unbelievable. Santa is so evil.
She looks so sad but we all know it is the mothers who suffer the most in times of pestilence.
Safe trip home
Oh no!! First she gets that orange....and now Santa gives her the Pox. Poor Wonderbaby!!
OMG, that picture is so horrendously heart-breaking! A bagillion warm wishes for a speedy recovery for you both. I used to think I didn't want the vaccine for Amelia, then my nurse friend talked to me about it. She also told me about her not quite 2 year old nephew who had it absolutely everywhere, even on his 'little man', and that he would just stand there, holding it and whimpering, "pain". As if that story wasn't enough, that photo has absolutely made up my mind. May Santa be saving a beautiful blessing for the New Year!
Roz
Oh poor wonder baby. It may not help, but the exact same thing happened to us last year. We trecked all the way from NZ to England for xmas, and just after xmas, my then 2 year old got 'poxed'. 2 weeks later her big sister followed suit. I can recommend oat baths to soothe the skin, and packs of frozen peas to soothe the really crazy itching bits. Hope she feels better soon.
Oh. What sad news. And what a sad photo.
May 2007 be much, much better.
Her expression says it all. It says, "MOTHER! WHY HAVE YOU ALLOWED THIS POX TO BE VISITED UPON MY TENDER BODY??"
Poor baby!
THAT is the most adorable, pathetic little urchin I've seen in a long time. Feel better soon WB.
Oh that is the saddest, most pathetic little picture I've seen--the poor little guy. He must feel awful. But you know, even with all those sores he looks just adorable?
Oh no!!!!
Oh, poor sweet baby!
Well...look at the bright side: lifelong immunity, and no need to remember booster shots before she has her own kiddies. (Your grandchildren! Eep!)
But oh...Bad Santa! Bad, bad, Santa! Coal for you next year, Santa!
Gentle hugs for Wonderbaby.
Aaaaaaack. Poor darling. I hope she is well and itch-free very soon.
Well, in case you missed it in the Bad Mother Manual, there is a universal truth that into every holiday (no, make that every kid-centric holiday), a little rain must fall -- or a little fever, projectile vomit, night terrors, broken bone, childhood illness last seen in the 1960s, or some such rot....wait till the tyke is 5 and really psyched about Halloween and spikes a raging fever just after you get all the sutffing in place for the costume which your husband told you looked a little warm!
OMG, poor little wonderbaby looks so upset. That's such a sad picture!
Hope it passes soon. Poor kids when they get sick. :(
Oh No! That poor little sweetheart...
I hope she has a speedy recovery :)
That face: SWOON.
Here's a much needed hug for you. (((hugs)))
Poor thing, I hope she gets better soon, lots of big hugs to you and wb.
Oh!!! Poor baby! Your pediatrician didn't offer the chickenpox vaccine? Or did it (gulp) not work?!
Leave it to wonderbaby to still look cute in spite of being so itchy and miserable!
Oh, poor sweet thing! I hope she (and you) feel better soon - I recommend Aveeno baths for itching, and check with your pediatrician, but a bit of Solarcaine helped here for a rotten case of poison ivy. Best wishes for 2007 after that auspicious start.
Oh how I want to hug WonderBaby and draw her a lukewarm baking soda bath.
In spite of the vax, we had the pox here last year too. The worst part for me was not being able to go ANYWHERE.
Happy New Year, my friend!
I'm so sorry, HBM, hope it all clears up quickly...you've had them, right?
RIGHT?!
Big huge hugs and kisses to the Wonderbaby. Looks like she needs a whole lot of extra cuddling right now.
That may be the most pathetic picture I have ever seen! Poor Wonderbaby.
Oh that S-U-C-K-S the suckitude of suckiness. Feel better soon, babe!
Oh no! Poor Wonderbaby! I'm so sorry!
Your poor baby. Not ONE of my three kids - and the oldest is 7 - have ever had chicken pox. We're getting the little one immunized against it today, and I think I'm going to hustle on getting the older two, as well. Yikes.
poor baby! that look on her face really says it all.
I hope things are looking up in 2007.
Oh, that sucks. Hope Baby has a speedy recovery. Please send our regards to Tanner
Have a great year
AD
My goodness, but you've had a bad run of it. Surely 2007 will be easier. How could it not be? You must all recover, because I need to ask you how to move from the swaddle to the no-swaddle! You and WonderBaby blazed the path!
Sorry. This is about poor cutie and her awful pox. Would it, though, be wrong to say it's a great picture?
Dilemmas, dilemmas.
Good luck.
I'd like to be the 78th person to say poor, poor Wonderbaby.
And poor Bad Mother too!
Ohmigod. Having just returned from the Left Coast myself (flying solo with a toddler, woo hoo!) I don't feel sorry for myself any longer as it clearly could have been worse. Doesn't that make you feel better.
That photo just melts your heart...
(...and makes me almost reconsider my decision not to give my little one the vaccine.)
Good luck!
Hoping the new year brings you health and oatmeal baths to help with the itches. Poor thing. And the baby, too.
oh no! poor Wonderbaby! I hope she's feeling better!
We escaped this a couple of months ago...but I figure it's going to hit us sooner or later.
okay, as comment #79, I know I'm unacceptably late in offering my sympathies, but DAMN. That's not a good way to spend the new year.
I hope WonderBaby is feeling better soon... :(
Just checking in for signs of pox recession. Hope she's doing okay. You deserve a happy peaceful 2007, all of you. Let's start with clearing up the pox, shall we?
It's true. Illnesses seek out and prey upon our young at times of holiday cheer. One Christmas Eve/ Wee hours of Christmas morning we spent entirely out on our back step, looking at the stars, signing endless rounds of toddler songs and exposing the toddler to the cool, humid night air prescribed by the doc for the croup. When we got too tired to keep it up we opened the windows in our bedroom and all crawled under the duvet. Once he stopped we all slept til 10am, my last ever Christmas sleep in was brought to me by the croup. Twas our first, but not our last case of the Christmas sickies.
Aw poor kiddo! She looks so devastated! Hope the pox on your house clears up soon (and good she won't get it when everyone at school gets it!).
Oh noooooo! I'm so sorry!
Oh, poor girl. We have the pestilence too. Both of my boys got RSV and have been on a nebulizer for days. I know how you feel - it's awful. I hope you all get some relief soon.
Poor Wonderbaby...and just a few months shy of getting the vaccine.
Wishing her a speedy recovery and a safe trip home.
Happy New Year!
No friggin' way. What a nice way to spend the holiday.
That is awful. I'm so sorry. Hope she feels better soon (and that you no longer have to deal with it).
poor little thing...
I hope 2007 is a happy & healthy one for you and
wonder baby.
